Today I Occupy

I have decided to join the worldwide Occupy movement here in San Miguel de Allende ... here are a couple more videos from the weekend activities, minus the goat slaying, which is in progress ... some of you may not wish to view the goat slaying/fiesta video from Fortino's place ... anyway ...

Not much and quite a bit

Warbasse was a madman walking today. I'm hanging. It was a day of not much and quite a bit.

Tomorrow we slay the goat.

Today

OK, this morning I knocked out midwestauction.com by noon, we're heading up to the churches for a video report, we'll walk about the Jardin and get something to eat somewhere before happy hour back here. We have Okie State and the points and we'll watch the games tonight at Manolo's. That's pretty much a typical day anymore.

Except tomorrow.

Tomorrow will be unlike any other day in my life. Warbasse has taken a car wash guy named Fortino under his wing and helped their hopelessly poor family out. We'll be visiting them again this Sunday like we did last Sunday - except tomorrow we'll be slaughtering a goat in the morning before the big fiesta in the afternoon. A resourceful young woman in her 20s named Isabella will be doing the knife work. I hope I don't pass out.

We'll have a report on that deal for sure.

Interim Comments

In the section of this video dealing with Happy Hour, I have used the royal "we." All will be relieved to know that my host continues steadfastly in his abstinence from alcohol, and consequently México remains relatively intact.

As of the time of posting of this entry, I am watching the Cardinals play the Brewers at Manolo's Sports Bar in the company of the beautiful bartender Marianne. My host has stayed home this evening to edit and post this video on my blog. For further comments of the host, please go here.

Catching Up

Warbasse has posted an entry in his blog to catch you up on my Week One here. You will find a link to that entry on the right under My Blog List. "Wings Over México: Week One."

Dump me here again

Warbasse and I today went to the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende and visited a family Warbasse knew who had very little in material belongings. It was a dump, literally, the protrudings of a landfill. We had a great time.

We brought beer and ate fish. We entertained with stupid Spanish and viewed all their photos. We transported a washing machine and soaked in their smiles. The little one, Alan, is 1.

It was a very rich day.

Splendid scoring

Me and Warbasse took in a basketball game yesterday in the big public park ... I kept close track of the score(r) ...

Bevo takes a beating

I kept mostly to myself, but it was great watching the Sooners pound Texas in front of a bunch of silly Longhorn fans yesterday, even if it was in Mexico.

Buenos this, buenas that

I've given up on Spanish for the most part. Buenas diaz till noon, buenas tardes from noon till dark, buenos noches after that ... 2 are feminine, 1 masculine ... whatever ... sometimes I just say buenas and let them figure it out ... hola works ok I think ... i say mucho gusto a lot too ... another fave is mas o menos - more or less.

Had a fine spaghetti dinner with 2 of Warb's French-Canadien friends last night, which was great. Earlier Friday I had eggs Benedictine with Hollandaise sauce at Juan's - a place I certainly will be returning to ... the night before we had oysters Rockerfeller at Harry's, a place near the big plaza that caters as much to Americans as Mexicans ... will be returning there also.

Today we will watch the OU/Texas game at the Longhorn Smoke House, a place about 4 blocks away. That place is adorned with Longhorn memorabilia, including a big painting of Bevo right under the big TV ... I fully expect to be killed there today.

The big news over the last 2 days are my new boots and new hat. I bought both at a big marketplace - the hat for 165 pesos and the boots for 400 pesos ... then had the boots treated at the big plaza for another 12 pesos. The hat is cool and the boots are awesome ... if anybody looks at me funny I just point to the boots, baaaay-beeeee.

Picked up another 2500 pesos yesterday to get me through for awhile I hope.

San Miguel - Day 1

Well, well, well ... here we are ... we flew into Leon about noon Tuesday and were greeted by soldiers with machine guns - I felt right at home.

Customs was a breeze, then a 60-minute drive to San Miquel ... first restaurant me and Warbasse, my handler on this deal, hit was el Rinconcito, where I had four little faugita tacos, muy picante, and a couple of Modelo beers ... I share this detail because the food and drink here are outstanding ... the produce is outstanding, those tortillas are outstanding ... after just 24 hours I can tell my body loves the food ... onions, peppers, salsa, eggs, picante this and picante that, even the limes for the beer and trago are perfect ... I'm serious!!!

The streets are tiny and the sidewalks tinier ... you walk a lot here and you spend a lot of time hopping up and down curbs because the sidewalks are one way and I figure being the new guy I should yield ... Very soon I will be buying new footwear to handle the cobblestone streets - some are smooth and most are not - they dumped a bunch of stone in some areas and called it a street. I'm also going to buy a hat, probably a light fedora ... I could also use a new belt and probably a haircut. I digress.

The trek up the hill to the big plaza where the big church and statue of San Miguel reside is rather steep - you kind of feel like Rocky when you get to the top ... we hit a fine bar and I had Tradicional trago (tequila) and Bohemia beer and limes for each ... the trago is very very smooth ... I really don't drink trago, but I do now I guess ... I had two pulls of each ... Warbasse hired 8 Mariachis (sp?) to sing a couple of songs and they really belt it out - guitars, violins, trumpets, the whole works - I wish Simon could have seen that.

We hit a another bar coming down the hill and - wouldn't you know it - they had the baseball playoffs on ... already know where to go for the Yankees tonight - and more trago ... also, the joint for Saturday's OU/Texas game is right across the street from a really fine breakfast place - where this morning I had eggs/beans/muy picante on tortillas ... restaurant meals are about half price those at home - booze slightly higher than half price. There are convenience stores and groceries and shops crammed on every block in this area.

After siesta today we're going across town in Warbasse's pickup to fetch a month of his mail ... then happy hour!! Warbasse gave me a Spanish handbook and today's lesson will be numbers. Hasta luego!!

Pesos

It looks as if I am going to need more pesos.
